Records of/or relating to Witherle & Co., which was operated as a general store by William Witherle and Benjamin Hook in Castine, Me., under name Hook & Witherle from 1806-1808 when Witherle took over operation as sole proprietor; from 1810-1844 operated by Witherle and John Head Jarvis as Witherle and Jarvis; from 1844-1855 as William Witherle & Co., at end of which time son William Howe Witherle joined business with retirement of his father; operated as Witherle & Co. from 1855-1875 by William Howe Witherle and George H. Witherle, as general store supplying Castine residents and fishermen, also acting as a chandlery, expanding to vessel management.
